Certainly, this is a word that we (in the modern age) have come across more than once. Our whole livelihood is based on this word. Throughout history we have seen civilization gain and even lose their own freedom. Independence, at times, is associated with this seven-letter word. Then really, what does this word mean? Freedom, some may argue, is the power or right to act, speak, or think as one wants. There really isn't that much more to it and yet it is enough to satisfy the soul.
If this truly is freedom then why do we not taste the sweetness that it has promised unto us? Freedom, like many things in this world, is limited. It is not limited by need but by greed but yet again it is not limited by greed but by need. Simply put, we lose our freedom to those who wish to have more without the consideration of those that they choose to take away from and similarly we lose it to those who consider both who they take from and who they give to.
When put into context, it is clear to see that freedom is not necessarily one of the easiest things to understand. It is complex but we can at least try to understand it. Freedom is a good thing. In fact it could be one of the greatest things. But like all good things, there is a negative side to freedom.
The secret to happiness is freedom . . . And the secret to freedom is courage.
Thucydides
What might that be? Simple. Humanity! Freedom can be used in any way thought imaginable. Think of it and you can most certainly do it. I have always been told that choices have consequences and true enough, they do. Anything that we do, no matter how big or small will have an outcome. For this exact reason we must always learn how to control the freedom that we receive.
It is for this exact reason that the secret to freedom is courage. We won't always do what is right but that's no excuse to never do anything at all. Freedom is very scary but no matter what the outcome we must always try to see the gray.
If you want to conquer fear, don't sit home and think about it. Go out and get busy.
Dale Carnegie
Human beings are not always going to be the best users of freedom. From time to time we will take for granted this precious gift but we most certainly should never stop declaring our freedom and liberty. Who knows how much longer we will have it?
